Reviving Rural China: Yard Seclusion by Evolution Design

Award-winning architectural innovation breathes new life into Chinese countryside

Evolution Design, a team led by Lei Jin, Tianqi Guan, and Teng Guo, has undertaken a unique project aimed at revitalizing rural China. Their project, Yard Seclusion, is a testament to innovative design, social responsibility, and respect for tradition.

Yard Seclusion is a design project that transforms vacant houses in rural Chinese villages into high-quality living spaces. The project is not just about architectural innovation; it also addresses social issues prevalent in rural China. By training local farmers to provide hospitality services and develop menus based on local produce, the project encourages economic growth in these areas. Remarkably, 75 percent of the sales revenue goes to the local farmers, incentivizing more young people to return to the village.

The uniqueness of Yard Seclusion lies in its respect for tradition. The original texture and spatial relationship between the farmhouses and their surrounding courtyards have been preserved. This approach allows the renovated spaces to blend seamlessly with the village's existing structures, maintaining the rural charm while introducing modern comforts. The design team's principle is to originate "outside" of tradition, yet coexist with it, allowing the rural heritage to extend and be cherished in a more respectful way.

The realization of Yard Seclusion involved repairing broken roofs with traditional stone slabs and rebuilding collapsed cottages. These efforts not only preserved the local architectural style but also enriched the layers between courtyards. Privacy was a key consideration in the design, with an exterior corridor added to the main living area to preserve the stunning mountain views. The use of a glass roof and a semi-transparent U-shaped glass wall in the corridor allows for natural light to filter into the room, creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere.

Despite the challenges of keeping costs under control and completing the renovation in less than two months, the design team managed to deliver an impressive result. The use of local materials and labor helped to keep costs down, while the revenue-sharing model with local farmers ensured a stable income for the community. This innovative approach has attracted more farmers to provide vacant houses and collaborate with the design team.

Yard Seclusion is a shining example of how design can be used to address social issues and promote sustainable development. The project has been recognized with a Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2018, a testament to its outstanding contribution to art, design, and society. The project serves as an inspiration for future initiatives aimed at revitalizing rural communities through innovative design and social entrepreneurship.
